But what do you do?

We had 3 weeks between the end of a summer series and Camp Whatever 2010. We had planned on doing a series that is all about preparing students for camp, as we took hundreds of students, it would be a great way to get them thinking camp-mindedly. It turned out to be a very effective series! Each week was themed a different aspect of their preparation (watch the Bumper video, or look at the bottom of this post) for more detail.

Anyway, here is the logo I designed, the verse slide that accompanied it, and third item I give you all as a gift! It is a simple side-screen graphic that looped over and over for the walk-ins, etc. It was a simple After Effects deal with the animated dot and spiral loading icon. Enjoy!

There are two more pieces I designed for this series (as well as every series): the small group question template and the bumper. The small group question template was a fun design because I think the theme consistency is pretty great. I love it when I can design elements that carry over to the rest. The bumper is essentially the logo with videos inset of Camp Whatever 2009 that fit with the specific theme. I hope you also enjoy these!

In keeping with the Captain America theme, I thought it would be cool to do something similar to Melanie’s t-shirt design from the previous year–recreate the uniform! We got a sweet deal on a 2-color print shirt and they turned out pretty nicely!

Every year our middle school students get a great and unique opportunity to participate in a missions trip right in their own backyards! We call it Arms Around Smyrna, and it’s been a great experience for a number of years. The kids visit places like nursing homes, food banks, elementary and middle schools, and other community places all to show God’s love locally! It’s awesome to see the response that it draws from community members; people really do notice a difference!

Melanie, who used to work with LifePoint Students, designed an Arms Around Smyrna logo and t-shirt similar to the Superman logo. The theme became “Hometown Heroes.” This year, Arms Around Smyrna was one of the earliest events in my new job which began in March. I thought it’d be great to continue the theme of Hometown Heroes. One of my all time favorites is Captain America, so he was a very apropos choice for a theme this year.

The three items I’ll show you are: A kiosk sign for check-in the day of the event, the logo slide for the screens, and the blank slide for information on the screens.

Signs are about as simple as my job gets. They provide copy (usually!) and I make a simple 11×17″ design that fits with the specific division (preschool, kids, students, college) and then upload the PDF for their team (usually interns) to run off and hang. These two signs were made over the last few weeks. The blue one was simply to sit on a table at our Camp Share Service and let kids know where to pick up forms from. The simple white and red one was for a table where parents of upcoming 6th graders could sign their kid up for Crossover.

I think I like making signs… Maybe. I’ll get back to you on that one! I just got another email asking for another sign!

Brittany, our Director of Preschool at LifePoint, does a great job to have a get-together for her volunteers after any kind of big event or thing that has happened. I created the first one, and kept the design consistent with the next one, just changing the colors and content. I really like it; it’s simple, which I feel like is best. Hope you like, too!

The only problem with doing a blog like this, where I show you all what I’m doing in my job, is that if I try to be descriptive in my titles, I can’t really be creative and call it something clever like, “Mice in Manhattan!” or anything… I’m stuck with “Promotional Handout and Nursing Room Sign.” Sigh… such is the life I suppose!

Anyway, these two simple designs are for our preschool ministry. The dark salmon-colored one was for when a group of kids were moving up classes, for promotion purposes. It was just a very simple quarter-sheet handout we handed to parents as they were walking out the door with their kids. Things like that are great just to hand them and let them read; it takes 10 seconds and informs them of what’s going on. The second one is a simple sign to raise awareness in the preschool hallway that there is a nursing room available. Doesn’t really need much more explanation than that. It is hung a few places throughout the hallway, just as a reminder.

I am going to go ahead and get this all out of the way! Adventure Week is LifePoint’s equivalent to vacation Bible school, and boy is it awesome! Praise the Lord for allowing this past year to really reach over 900 kids (between two simultaneous campuses!) for God’s kingdom! I’ll explain more as I write more posts from Adventure Week, but I created so much signage, artwork, and videos for this week. It was really a personal stretch because things kept coming up that we needed that had to get done… all on top of student’s Camp Whatever that was coming up the week after Adventure Week! It was really great to be able to use the skills I’ve been blessed with, even if no one really noticed (that’s where I like to be).

Without any further ado, here are just a sample of signage I had to make for this awesome week. I think overall. I ended up with 52 signs, so try to imagine these and all the many more I didn’t post!

I really love to shoot and put together training videos. In this day and age, the proliferation of YouTube and the internet make it way easy to share a lot of information in a quick, but still personal, way without requiring every single volunteer to meet at a single time. This is the first one David McCaman, the Director of LifePoint Students created for his small group leader volunteers. I’ve since shot a couple more, and he recorded one himself. It’s great!

Anyway, without any further ado, here it is (Note: I’ve laughed to myself twice typing this post, because you all aren’t the original intended audience, so it probably won’t make sense or apply to your life very well; I’m just putting this out here to show you all!).

So we were in the middle of a series for kids when Palm Sunday and Easter rolled in. We took a 2-week break where Allen and volunteers wrote the quick two-weeker. I love how the team can come together and get things done like this. This project was one of the first ones on my new job. They are simple designs; just a verse and main point each.

These were two simple designs I did. The first is what is called the Preschool Column; it is basically a weekly newsletter the preschool team posts each Sunday in the classrooms that has all sorts of great information in it: upcoming dates, birthdays, prayer requests, and special instructions for each age-level class!

The second piece is a template I made for their take-home devotional they will write. It will contain a simple Bible story and some thoughts on this. My style is pretty simple, clean, and minimalist. They asked for simple and similar to the Column, so I created this! This is actually a front and back card they hand out, but here, the image is represented by a full sheet.
